ShelfVerdict's calculators are planning tools. They estimate shelf deflection and wood movement from published reference values and standard formulas; they do not inspect your lumber, your joints, or your room, and they are not engineering advice or certification.
Species properties shown here are published averages for clear specimens. Individual boards differ — by grain, defects, and growing conditions — and sheet-goods stiffness in particular varies by manufacturer. Where a shelf will carry heavy loads over people, pets, or anything fragile or valuable, design with margin, test with real weight before loading it for good, and anchor tall furniture to the wall.
Movement allowances are estimates built on the same published averages; build in extra clearance beyond the computed figure, and expect individual boards to move more or less than the table value. Finish ratings on this site are editorial summaries of published trade literature, not manufacturer specifications — always test a finish on offcuts of your actual wood.
Prices and product details for third-party tools or materials mentioned anywhere on this site can change without notice.
